Volunteers Needed for "Bringing the Outdoors In" Program

Berewick Recreation Center(July 16, 2016) The Berewick Recreation Center needs volunteers for their "Brininging the Outdoors In" program.

WHEN: Wednesday, July 20, 2016

TIME: 9:00 am-3:00 pm

WHAT: “Bringing the Outdoors In” has been selected as a winner of the National Parks Build Community Campaign and will receive a $20,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and The Walt Disney Company, including Disney Citizenship, Disney/ABC.

WHERE: “Bringing the Outdoors In” at Wallace Pruitt, Berewick, and Hickory Grove Recreation Centers will incorporate nature and gardening education into the programming for youth and their parents through our Fun Fit Centers. This project will allow year round programming & education for the public.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Park & Recreation Department focuses on Health & Wellness Programming as well as conservation so “Bringing the Outdoors In” will connect youth to nature and expose the participants to a variety of new experiences by introducing them to trees, science tables, discovery sand and water tables, books, art easels and crafts, real life nature specimens they can view up close, and hands on activities.

The healthy living component will increase the awareness of gardening, the importance of vegetables and fruits, and a healthy lifestyle. The kids will use age appropriate gloves and tools to garden and create sprout and grow gardens, which they will plant outside. These programs will provide socialization, opportunities to gain new knowledge and skills, and a sense of achievement in producing their own healthy food.
