Meetings Set for Families Attending New Elementary Schools

(March 10, 2009) Principals of the new Berewick/Dixie River elementary school and Hamilton/Smith elementary school have scheduled meetings for families with children who will be attending those schools next year.

Both principals have meetings scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 at 6:00 PM at Southwest Middle School (13620 Steele Creek Road, behind the library). The Berewick/Dixie River meeting will be in the cafeteria (on the right front of the school) and the Hamilton/Smith meeting will be in the Media Center. An additional meeting for Berewick/Dixie River families is scheduled for the next night at Berryhill Elementary School (10501 Windy Grove Rd).

Berewick/Dixie River

Cheryl Turner, who was named principal of the new elementary school on Dixie River Road near Berewick last month, will be holding two Meet the Principal Nights, one on Wednesday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria at Southwest Middle School and the other on Thursday, March 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Berryhill Elementary School.

There will be opportunities to sign up for various committees to help with naming the school, selecting a mascot and colors, and working with the PTSA and School Leadership Team. Ms. Turner will be sending information home to parents by students on Wednesday, March 11. If you have a child who will be attending the new school next year, please plan on attending and meeting your new principal. She's looking for as much participation as possible.

Hamilton/Smith

Acquanetta Edmond, principal of the new elementary school at Hamilton and Smith Roads, will be holding a community meeting on Wednesday, March 18 at 6:00 PM in the Southwest Middle School media center.

Ms. Edmond invites students and parents to begin pondering a name for the school, school colors, mascot, and various programs. In addition, the construction contractors have been invited to tell about the progress of the facility.

As the letter below to students and families states, there's a lot to be done, and there are endless possibilities for parental involvement.

Dear Youngblood Elementary School Families:

I am thrilled about opening the new Youngblood Elementary School.  I would like to welcome the students and parents that I have worked with previously and I would like to extend a welcome to students and parents that will be joining me in this new endeavor.  The opening of the new school is an exciting event for all of us, and I am gracious for the opportunity.  As a lifelong educator, it is my belief that a positive and thriving learning environment is important for all children as they grow academically and socially.

As we begin to ponder questions such as the proposed name for the new elementary school, the school colors, the mascot, and various programs; it is my goal to make this a community effort by involving the parents in this exciting undertaking.  There is so much to be done and this is a phenomenal opportunity for the children, the community, and me.

Education is my first love.  Serving as the principal at Lake Wylie Elementary School for approximately 3 years enabled me the opportunity to provide and maintain a learning environment that promoted academic growth, social character development, and student success.  Diversity was an eminent part of my former experiences, which enabled me to be able to serve in various capacities as an advocate for all children.  I am excited about educational opportunities that we will provide the children attending Youngblood Elementary.  Please know that I cannot do this alone as I want your input and your support and involvement is a necessity for the children and the school.

We will have various committees involving naming the school, the historical process, selection of school colors, website development, PTSA members, and SLT members for the 2009-10 school year.  There are endless possibilities for parental involvement.

Our first community meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Southwest Middle School.  You are invited to attend.  The meeting will convene in the media center at Southwest.  I am looking forward to seeing you all there.

In the meantime, you may email me at acquanetta.edmond@cms.k12.nc.us and my contact information is 980-343-0385.

Sincerely,

Acquanetta S. Edmond
