Steele Creek Historical Society Meets Monthly; Christmas Feast is November 27

(November 26, 2006) The next meeting of the Steele Creek Historical and Genealogical Society will be on Monday, November 27 at 6:00 P.M. at the Family Life Center at Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church (corner of S Tryon Street and Westinghouse Blvd). This is the Society's annual Christmas meeting and feast.

The special guest will be Ms. Lisa Gray from the Charlotte Trolley System. Ms. Gray will give a brief history of the trolley system. The first trolley system operated in Charlotte from 1893 until it was discontinued in 1938. She will also have information on the new system, its current progress, and its projected future expansion.

The society will be providing the meat and drinks for the Christmas feast. Please call
704-588-4805 and leave a message as to how many people are attending so that organizers can estimate how much meat to provide. Also remember to bring a covered dish or dessert to be shared.

The next meeting will be at the Steele Creek Library (13620 Steele Creek Road) on January 29.

The Steele Creek Historical and Genealogical Society meets on the last Monday of each month, except July and December. All meetings are at the Steele Creek Branch Library except for the November Christmas feast and when the library is unavailable due to early voting. These meetings are at Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. Meetings begin at at 7:00 P.M. except for special times set for a function (such as the Christmas feast, which begins at 6:00 P.M.).

Each meeting features a guest speaker. Presentations cover various topics involving the history of Mecklenburg and York Counties, but emphasis on the Steele Creek area.

The Society has donated various photographs and other records to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library System. These are available at the Steele Creek Library and at the Carolina Room and the Main Library.

Annual dues are $15.00 payable by January each year. A quarterly newsletter, GLEANINGS, is published in January, April, July, and October. Dues may be paid at the January meeting or sent by mail to
