STEELE CREEK NEWS

Meeting on Rezoning for Apartments at 49 and 160 is August 31

(August 11, 2005) On Wednesday, August 31 at 7:00 p. m. The Walter Fields Group will hold a public meeting at the Steele Creek Library to present information on a rezoning application to allow construction of apartments near the Highways 49 and 160 intersection behind the Harris Teeter and adjacent to Southwest Middle School.

In Rezoning Petition 2005-149, Charter Properties is requesting rezoning of two parcels that currently are zoned R-5(CD) and CC to R-17MF(CD). Along with another parcel that already is zoned R-17MF(CD) these will create a site that totals approximately 40.5 acres. The requested rezoning would allow construction of approximately 600 rental apartments. Developers expect the first occupancy to occur in summer of 2007.

To view the rezoning application, locator map, and site plan, see the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission's web page for Rezoning Petition 2005-149,

Local residents refer to the Highway 49 and 160 intersection as Steele Creek Town Center. It continues to develop as the focal point of the Lower Steele Creek community. Construction currently is underway on a 600,000 square foot shopping center, RiverGate, and Carolinas Healthcare System is requesting a zoning change that will permit development of a medical center.
