City Plans Steele Creek Area Transportation Projects

(June 6, 2023) Keith Bryant, Design Section Program Manager, Charlotte Department of Transportation, gave a presentation on Transportation Projects planned by the city within City Council District 3 at Victoria Watlington's Town Hall on June 3, highlighting Steele Creek projects, (See a map and full list of Charlotte Department of Transportation and North Carolina Department of Transportation projects in District 3 below.)

The City of Charlotte will widen Brown-Grier Road to four lanes with curbs and shared-use paths as part of the city's Comprehensive Neighborhood Improvement Program (CNIP) for the Whitehall/Ayrsley area. This project also includes adding sidewalks or shared-use paths along Sandy Porter Road from Red Hickory Lane to Williams Glenn Rd. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2024.

A restriping project will add bike lanes to Whitehall Park Drive, connecting Brown Grier Road to Ayrsley and S Tryon Street. Striping is to be completed in 2023.

A pedestrian safety and capacity improvement project at S Tryon Street and Sandy Porter Road is nearly complete.

The shared-use path along Westinghouse Boulevard is part of the city's Comprehensive Neighborhood Improvement Program (CNIP) for the Whitehall/Ayrsley area. It will connect Steele Creek Road, which will also have a multi-use path in the future, with S Tryon Street.

The city is installing new street lighting along key corridors, including S Tryon Street.

Other projects will be constructed or paid for by developers as a condition of their rezoning approval. These projects are not shown on these Charlotte project maps.
