2023 School Bond
to Include Two Steele Creek Projects
(March
1, 2023) Dennis LaCaria, Consultant with Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Schools Facilities Planning and Real Estate, gave a presentation on
the proposed 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Plan at the Steele Creek
Residents Association Annual Meeting on February 23. The plan
includes 30 projects with a total cost of $2.997 billion.
The CMS School Board
approved the plan at its February 28 meeting. The bond package will also need to
be approved by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners before
appearing in the November 2023 ballot.
The plan includes two
projects in Steele Creek:
- New 54 classroom middle school #3 on Steele Creek Road
south of Hamilton Road to relieve Southwest and Kennedy Middle
Schools - $99,370,551.
- Onsite replacement for Steele Creek Elementary School with
increased capacity-
$80,279,757
And two nearby
projects:
- Additional and renovation for 2nd phase of magnet program
implementation at E.E. Waddell
- Offsite replacement of Berryhill Elementary School
The initial list of 125 projects was refined down to 30
projects to be included in the 2023 bond package. Projects in
the original 125 included onsite replacements for Kennedy
Middle School, Lake Wylie Elementary School, and the balance
of Olympic High School as well as a new elementary school at
the River District.
