STEELE CREEK NEWS
Construction on
Highway 160 Widening to Begin in 2028
(March
1, 2023) Stuart Basham, DM-STIP Program Manager with the Division 10
Project Development Unit of the North Carolina Department of
Transportation (NCDOT) gave an update on highway projects at the Steele Creek Residents Association Annual
Meeting on February 23.
Right
of way acquisition for widening Highway 160 (Steele Creek Road) from
I-485 to the South Carolina state line is scheduled to begin in
2025, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2028. Project
development began in 2017 but was suspended and remained idle during
the COVID shutdown. Design work is underway for the segment between
I-485 and NC Highway 49 (B Section), and work will be restarted soon
for the segment between NC Highway 49 and the South Carolina state
line (A Section).
The project proposes
to widen Highway 160 from two lanes to a four-lane median divided
roadway the length of the project. While several of the existing
intersections will remain as traditional full movement
intersections, NCDOT is studying various intersection treatments at
the remaining intersections, including reduced conflict
intersections and a continuous flow intersection at Highway 160 and
Highway 49 (S. Tryon Street). For more detail, see
U-5766 Steele Creek Road Improvements . Note that this
web page is not current.
The schedule for the
project has fluctuated over time. See
Widening of Highway 160 has been Delayed Again (2/14/21).
