New Election Districts Adopted Based on 2020 Census Results

(March 11, 2022) After every census, election districts must be updated to ensure that each district has about the same population. Normally, census counts would have been released in April 2021, but these were delayed until August due to the pandemic. (See Steele Creek Population Growth Outpaces Mecklenburg County, Census Shows (August 13, 2021))

Because the Charlotte City Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board district boundaries could not be redistricted in time for July 2021 candidate filing, the 2021 elections for Charlotte Mayor and City Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board district representatives have been delayed until 2022. Other elections scheduled for 2022 will continue as normal.

Initial redistricting was completed in November 2021, including Charlotte City Council and Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners,, but districts for US Congress, North Carolina Senate, and North Carolina House of Representatives were revised by court action in February 2022, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board amened their districts in January 2022.

The next election is a primary and will be held May 17, 2022.

For a listing of candidates (except for Soil & Water District Supervisor and School Board) and other election information, see Mecklenburg County Board of Elections.

United States Congressional Districts

The North Carolina General Assembly adopted the districts for United States Congress on November 4, 2021, but these were revised by court decision on February 23, 2022.

All of Steele Creek is in new District 14 along with other parts of southwestern Mecklenburg County and most of Gaston County. For more information see https://www.ncleg.gov/Redistricting.

North Carolina State Senate Districts

The North Carolina General Assembly adopted districts for the North Carolina Senate on November 4, 2021 but adopted redrawn districts on February 17 per court order.

Almost all Steele Creek precincts continue to be in Senate District 39. The current boundary  was revised to remove precincts in the Ballantyne area and add precincts south of Uptown Charlotte. (See Steele Creek Voting Guide for the 2020 General Election (September 17, 2020) for a map of the current district.)  For more information see https://www.ncleg.gov/Redistricting.

North Carolina State House Districts

The North Carolina General Assembly adopted districts for the North Carolina House of Representatives on November 4, 2021 but adopted redrawn districts on February 17 per court order.

Mecklenburg County currently has 12 house districts. In the new map Mecklenburg has 13 districts. Almost all of Steele Creek is in new District 92, which looses seven precincts from the northern portion of the district and adds three precincts to the east. (See Steele Creek Voting Guide for the 2020 General Election (September 17, 2020) for a map of the current district.) See more information at https://www.ncleg.gov/Redistricting.

Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners

The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners adopted new districts on November 3. They only moved one precinct (98) from current District 2 into District 5. Steele Creek continues to be split, with Precincts 122 and 229 in District 6 and the remaining precincts in District 2.

For more information on County Commission redistricting, see https://www.mecknc.gov/Redistricting/Pages/Home.aspx.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education adopted its new election districts (Scenario CS-2) on November 9 but amended the map on January 11, 2022 to move Precinct 2 from District 5 to District 4. Currently, all of Steele Creek is in District 2, but most Steele Creek precincts are in new District 6 with Pineville and Ballantyne precincts. Precincts 78, 138, and 230 remain in District 2.

School Board members serve for four year terms. District and at-large representative elections normally alternate in odd year elections, but the non-partisan district representative elections were postponed from 2021 until November 2022. District members elected in 2022 will serve until the 2025 Election.

For more information see https://www.cms.k12.nc.us/boe/Pages/2021-board-district-map.aspx.

Charlotte City Council

The Charlotte City Council adopted the new City Council districts on November 8. The new map moves three precincts (Precincts 23, 24, and 81) from District 3 to District 2. The map also moves 13 other precincts to different City Council districts. That part of Steele Creek within the Charlotte city limits will continue to be entirely within District 3.

Charlotte Mayor, City Council At-Large, and City Council District representative elections were postponed from November 2021. The Primary Election is on March 8, 2022, and the General Election is on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, or May 17, 2022.

These districts are in litigation and thus are subject to change.
