STEELE CREEK NEWS
New Election Districts Adopted Based on 2020 Census Results
(March
11, 2022) After every census, election districts must be updated
to ensure that each district has about the same population. Normally,
census counts would have been released in April 2021, but these were
delayed until August due to the pandemic. (See Steele Creek Population Growth Outpaces Mecklenburg County, Census Shows (August 13, 2021))
Because the
Charlotte City Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board district boundaries could not be redistricted in time for July 2021 candidate filing,
the 2021 elections for Charlotte Mayor and City Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board district representatives
have been delayed until 2022. Other elections scheduled for 2022
will continue as normal.
Initial redistricting was completed in November 2021,
including Charlotte City Council and
Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners,, but
districts for US Congress,
North Carolina Senate, and
North Carolina
House of Representatives were revised by court action in February
2022, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board amened their
districts in January 2022.
The next election is a primary and
will be held May 17, 2022.
For a listing of candidates (except for Soil & Water
District Supervisor and School Board) and other election
information, see
Mecklenburg County Board of Elections.

Mecklenburg County
currently has 12 house districts. In the new map Mecklenburg has 13
districts. Almost all of Steele Creek is in new District 92, which looses
seven precincts from the northern portion of the district and adds
three
precincts to the east. (See Steele

2020) for a map of the current district.) See more information at

School Board members serve for four year terms. District and at-large representative elections normally alternate in odd year elections, but the non-partisan district representative elections were postponed
from 2021 until November 2022. District members elected in 2022 will
serve until the 2025 Election.

Council
The Charlotte City Council adopted the new City Council districts on November 8.
The new map moves three precincts (Precincts 23, 24, and 81) from District 3 to District 2. The map also moves 13 other precincts to different City Council districts.
That part of Steele Creek within the Charlotte city limits will continue to be entirely within District 3.
