Virtual Public Meeting for Walker Branch/Hoover Creek Greenway is November 30

(November 16, 2021) Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department will hold a virtual public meeting on their plans for extending the Walker Branch and Hoover Creek Greenways in the RiverGate area on November 30 beginning at 6:00 PM. To sign up for this meeting, and for additional information, go to Walker Branch & Hoover Creek Greenways. Please complete the survey questions on this page and provide additional feedback prior to the meeting.

The planned schedule is for bidding to occur in fall 2022, construction to start in winter or spring 2023, and completion in summer 2023.

The developers of RiverGate initially built two existing greenway sections. The section on the east side of the center opened in 2007. See Grand Opening for Walkers Branch Greenway Trail at RiverGate is October 14 (2006). The section on the southwest side opened in 2014. See Greenway Trail Opens along Hoover Creek at RiverGate (2014). The section next to the Walker Creek and Southbridge neighborhoods extending to Smith Road was completed in summer 2020, but there was no grand opening event due to the pandemic. See New Walker Branch Greenway is Complete and Available (2020). The original Walkers Branch trail also was repaired and upgraded in 2020.

Walker Branch Greenway Grand Opening, October 14, 2006

The new Walker Branch and Hoover Creek Greenway will extend north from South Tryon Street (Highway 49) to Sledge Road, and east from the existing Hoover Creek Greenway to Rivergate Parkway, closing the gaps between existing greenway sections. This greenway project is divided into two parts with the existing Walker Branch Greenway bisecting the two segments. This project will extend the existing Walker Branch Greenwayby about a mile and a half. Together, visitors will have access to over two miles of greenway trails that will connect to commercial and residential land uses.

See trail locations below for Mecklenburg County's Master Greenway Plan.

Segment 1: Walker Branch Greenway from Sledge Road to S Tryon Street (HWY 49). These preliminary recommendations for the greenway trail are subject to change based on design and budget considerations.

Segment 2: Hoover Creek Greenway from existing Hoover Creek Greenway to Rivergate Parkway. These preliminary recommendations for the greenway trail are subject to change based on design and budget considerations.

Please go to Walker Branch & Hoover Creek Greenways to register for the meeting and to complete the survey. The hope is for each individual interested in attending to not only register, but view the alignment, complete the survey questions, and provide additional feedback prior to the meeting. The only item required for successful registration is an email address.
