Violence
Prevention, Highways, Schools, and Greenways were Topics at
the 2023 Residents Association Annual Meeting
(March
7, 2023) The Steele Creek Residents Association held its 2023 Annual
Meeting on February 23. Residents got to talk to representatives of
over two dozen state and local government agencies and non-profit
organizations who contribute to the Quality of Life in Steele Creek.

Prevention, Highways, Schools, and Greenways.
The Residents
Association would like to thank
Kennedy Middle School Principal Kevin Sudemack, Thomas Wells, and other staff for
again hosting our meeting and providing the tables and audio-visual
equipment.
Mecklenburg County Office of Violence Prevention
Tracie Campbell, Senior Health Manager with the Mecklenburg County
Office of Violence Prevention, gave a presentation on
The Community
Violence Strategic Plan - The Way Forward.
Mecklenburg is the first county in North Carolina to establish an
office of Violence Prevention.
North Carolina
Department of Transportation
Stuart Basham,
DM-STIP Program Manager with the Division 10 Project Development
Unit of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) gave
an update on highway projects.
Right of way acquisition for widening Highway 160 (Steele Creek
Road) from I-485 to the South Carolina state line is scheduled to
begin in 2025, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2028.
Signs for Exit 4 on I-485 have been replaced. They identify it
as the Steele Creek Road exit and no longer say "Fort Mill."

Schools
Dennis
LaCaria, Consultant with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Facilities
Planning and Real Estate, gave a presentation on the proposed
2024-2028 Capital Improvement Plan. The plan includes 30 projects
with a total cost of $2.997 billion. The plan includes two projects in Steele Creek:
a new 54 classroom middle school on Steele Creek Road south of Hamilton Road and an onsite replacement for Steele Creek Elementary School.

Walker Branch Greenway
Karl Froelich, Chair of the
Association's Greenway Committee and Past
President of the Association, gave an update on plans for greenway
trails.
Construction will begin in 2023 on an
additional 1 mile section of the Walker Branch Trail north of S Tryon Street
continuing to Sledge Road.
Also in 2023, construction will begin on the .6 mile extension of
the Hoover Creek Greenway Trail along the south side of RiverGate
Shopping Center. See

Meet & Mingle
Attendees got to
talk to representatives of over two dozen state and local government agencies
and non-profit organizations during the Meet and Mingle
part of the meeting. This was a great opportunity to interact with
many of the people who affect the quality of life in Steele Creek.
